
Water supply

Provision of clean and safe water is crucial for urban development. The sources of water are natural springs, rivers, boreholes and rainwater harvesting at a small scale. The daily water production is 24,500 cubic meters. It is estimated that 98% of the area is covered with 18,000 client’s connections and 98% of the population have access to the water managed by MUWSA. MUWSA has introduced public water in Njoro and Kaloleni wards. Environmental resources used by the sector include Mt. Kilimanjaro, ground water aquifers, rivers and forest resources land.

However there is growing risk of polluting groundwater and other sources of water by cesspits, pit latrines and floods and extensive use of fertilizers. Water from leaking pipes and floods erodes land and causes water borne diseases such as typhoid and diarrhea.
